Acne Treatments
Are you
suffering from acne? Do you feel embarrassed by your skin condition? Do you need
help selecting an acne treatment that is best for your skin and for your type of
acne? We recommend that you review your options with your dermatologist, and select
the treatment that best fits you.
Acne can
not be completely “cured”, in can only be controlled. The acne treatments
are aiming
to prevent the appearance of new acne spots, improve the existing ones and prevent
scaring. Also, acne treatments
do not work over night, it takes weeks and weeks
before you can see any improvements, but your patience may pay off.
Depending
on your type of skin, and also on your type of acne, there are numerous treatments
on the market today. Do your research first, before deciding for a specific treatment.
Home treatments
The key
to having a clear and healthy skin is to keep it clean. Wash the acne affected area
twice a day with warm water and a gentle cleanser. Do not scrub it, and avoid harsh
soaps, as the skin needs to maintain it’s natural level of oil. The more you clean
and scrub, the more oil will be produced by the skin, aggravating the acne.
Home acne treatments
include over-the-counter products, mostly containing benzoyl peroxide, an antibacterial
agent which dries the skin and triggers the removal of dead skins from its surface,
and so the pores become more unlikely to block and to develop infections. Home treatment
could treat mild but not severe acne. Also, you will not see the effects of these
treatments immediately. But if there is no noticeable improvement in your acne condition
within two months, it is recommended to consult a dermatologist.
Prescription medicines
There are
also acne treatments using prescription medicines, also containing benzoyl peroxide.
If neither of these cleansing type acne treatment work for you, or if your type
of acne is more severe, there are some other topical treatments that you can apply
on your skin, or oral treatments, that come in a tablet form.

treatments have been developed, and they appear promising solution and effective
options if other traditional treatments fail to work. These treatments are still
being studied and evaluated and more work needs to be invested into determining
the effectiveness of these acne treatments and the long-term side-effects.
Laser and light therapy
These may be good treatments for people with both active acne and acne
scars. These therapies are aiming to improve skin texture and reduce the appearance
of acne scars.
-
Blue light therapy – the skin is being exposed to a low-intensity
blue light, believed to cure Propionibacterium acnes.
-
Pulsed light and heat energy therapy – it is believed that pulsed
light in conjunction with heat energy may destroy Propionibacterium acnes and may
reduce sebaceous glands, in the attempt to decrease the oil production.
-
Diode laser treatment - diode lasers can destroy the sebaceous glands in the dermis
without harming the skin. This treatment can be painful, and needs to be accompanied
with analgesics.
Cosmetic procedures
The cosmetic procedures could be very effective in treating acne conditions when
they are used in combination with other acne treatments.
-
Chemical peels - glycolic acid or salicylic acid, combined with
some acne creams, is being applied to the skin to remove dead skin cells, re-generate
new skin growth, unclog pores.
-
Microdermabrasion - this procedure exfoliates and unclogs pores.
If used in combination with other acne treatments, it increases their effectiveness.
