Acne Causes
What are the
acne causes ? Acne happens when there is over activity
in the glands producing sebum. The purpose of the sebum is to lubricate
your hair and skin. When too much sebum is produced, the hair follicles
can get clogged with oil and dead cells, producing acne spots. The
pores on the skin which are for the sweat glands do not get affected
by acne.
It has not been discovered what exactly cause the over-production
of sebum that causes acne, but there are a few known factors that
play a role in the development and evolution of acne:
- Hormones - one of the major
acne causes is a sex
hormones known as androgen, which starts it's production at
puberty. Hormones play an important role in the development
of acne spots during pregnancy or menstruation.
- Genetic Factors - acne can be inherited
from family members suffering from bad acne.
- Bacteria - The Propionibacterium bacteria
is normal on your skin, and would only harm the skin if an ideal
environment is created for the bacteria to grow.. The body's
immune system reacts to this bacteria through skin inflammations
and red spots.
- Make Up and Oily Cosmetics - these add
additional oil to the skin and have the ability to clog pores.
Specially if you have oily skin, you should watch out for certain
moisturizers and foundations containing lanolin, petrolatum,
vegetable oils, lauryl alcohol, oleic acid
There are also a number of factors that can make your acne worse:
- Stress - in certain circumstances, stress
may affect different hormone levels associated with the skins
oil glands, which can worsen an existing acne condition.
- Environmental Factors - humidity and pollution
could play a major role in the aggravation of your acne, and
also for your overall health
- Contraceptive Pills - beginning or stopping
to take some progestogen hormone based birth control pills could
make acne worse, while at the same time there are some contraceptive
pills that might improve your acne condition.
- Some Drugs - some medicines taken for epilepsy,
and other containing lithium, or high dosage of vitamins, or
steroid creams and ointments that are used for eczema
- Squeezing and Picking - these action will
propagate the infection more deeper into the skin, causing more
inflammation and scaring.
- Harsh Scrubbing and Cleansing - these actions
could cause even more irritation on the skin and make acne worse
Contrary to what many people believe, acne is not caused by dietary
factors like excess of chocolate or dairy products, and it is also
not caused by dirt.
